By rewinding the stator of a 30 MVA generator within six weeks, Sliedrecht based Bakker Repair + Services has helped out a Scandinavian power plant. To complete the overhaul within the agreed time the company worked 24/7 to get the job done.
Time was of great essence during the entire project. Because the giant generator is vital for the power supply of a Scandinavian plant, the machine needed to be operational again as soon as possible.
Dutch partner SPIT, from Almelo the Netherlands, dismantled the stationary part of the generator on site after which the stator was transported by ship to the workshop in Sliedrecht. There the 4x4x4 meter size, 49 tonnes weighing giant turned out to be too big for the pyrolysis-oven, where insulation is normally melted and removed under high temperatures. Now this had to be done manually in its cold state. ,,Cold demolition is time-consuming and takes much longer. We had to carve out 94 grooves with 20 centimetres of copper very carefully. That was a huge challenge,” says Manager Sales Johan Huisman from Bakker Repair + Services.
After the rewinding, the stator was transported back north, where he will be reinstalled and commissioned on the spot by SPIT. Huisman: ,,The generator has to be operational again before Christmas, that was the deal. That’s why we worked 24/7, day and night, for six weeks. Now we have completed the overhaul within the agreed time, Bakker has again shown that we keep our promises.”
The rewinding of electric motors, transformers and generators is a specialism of Bakker Repair + Services. The costs of winding often are cheaper than buying new machines. Moreover, an overhaul beats their delivery time. Thanks to rewinding, downtime and production losses are minimalised. ,,We excel in rewinding, also high-voltage generators,” Huisman says. ,,In this case it had to be done within a short period of time and we had to work 24/7. Thanks to this combination we were able to complete this project satisfactorily.”
