Rewinding exciter rotor shaft generator

The breakdown service of Bakker Repair + Services rushed to Liverpool just after new year to solve a breakdown on a ferry boat. One of the 1750 kVA shaft generators on the ferry boat, which can carry 300 passengers, 100 cars and 100 trucks, failed to build up the required voltage.

After inspecting the shaft generator, our Service Engineer concluded that the exciter rotor was broken en had to be rewinded. Together with the ship crew our Service Engineer dismantled the exciter rotor during a trip after which is was transported to the workshop of Bakker Repair + Services. The shaft generator was immediately assembled after removing the exciter rotor. This is because the shaft generator is part of the power train of the main engine which cannot run without the shaft generator.

Our skilled Rewinders worked around the clock to rewind and balance the exciter rotor within three days. The repaired exciter rotor is was installed in the shaft generator during a trip between Liverpool and Dublin. The shaft generator was commissioned successfully  to a very satisfied customer.
